Windows XP on my desktop crashed and seeing as I couldn't find my restore disk I figured I'd take the opportunity to switch out to Ubuntu. I know there's a few Linux users here and hopefully one of you can explain how to set up file sharing between my Linux Box and my PCs. I've read several different posts about using Samba and have followed them to the T and still have not been able to get anything working. My Ubuntu machine is directly wired to my router and my PCs are wireless if that makes any difference. Thoughts?

First I assumed that the nifty thing in Places that says Network that has Windows Network in it would be what I needed to make this work. Unfortunately I was wrong. I get an error "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server."

Thats when I read up on Samba. I've tried to modify the workgroup name and IP's both through the Samba Server Configuring as well as manually through the terminal. Below what I've got so far. I have not been able to get it to recognize the PC's on the network nor have I gotten the PC's to see the Linux machine.

I'm off to the strip to party, but here's a list of samba related links I've used in the past to help me configure stuff..

Wow.. I was greatly over complicating it. Admiral thanks for the links. I got it to work by getting rid of all the "extras" and making sure to restart Samba after making changes. I didn't do that before so no matter what I did it probably wouldn't have worked. I'm having a hard time keeping the shares being visible on the network, but as long as I keep a shortcut to the share on my desktop I can go back to it even if it doesn't show as visible on the network.

That's just awesome.. Get them hooked early. Any suggestions for games on Linux that I can get the little girl (4 year old) into?

not so much on the games. there's some drawing/paint type stuff that jas used to play. But now I just direct her to stuff like armorgames.com (flash) for games.

Just enable everyday stuff to encourage sitting in front of it. for instance, install VLC and let her watch her DVD movies on the computer. Let her stream her cartoons instead of sitting in front of the tv.

I've got an almost 4 year old girl. She loves Potato Guy (aka KTuberling). It's a KDE game but if you're willing to also install all the qt stuff, you can run it on Ubuntu/Gnome.
